Sometimes our presentations need to get our audiences to connect emotionally with our message. We might need them to say to themselves – “that’s me” or “I totally get that”!
People who connect with our message powerfully are more likely to be receptive – so how do we grab them quickly and easily? And how do we deal with the range of emotional responses within the room without a whole series of examples or anecdotes?
Images! It is true a picture says a thousand words sometimes enabling us to connect to our audience and move on quickly.
A few years ago I did a presentation to launch a Guide to Digitisation for the heritage sector.
A really dry subject but one that conjures a vast array of emotions among museum staff and volunteers – so I used the following slide first and bingo!
Everyone in the room could identify with at least one emoji – they were now ready for the content! I was saying “I understand you all” in less than 10 seconds.
